What Is a Vector Network Analyzer (VNA)?

A vector network analyzer measures how radio-frequency and microwave signals are transmitted through and reflected from a device. These measurements are expressed as scattering parameters, commonly called S-parameters.

What a VNA measures

Reflection measurements help describe impedance match and return loss. Transmission measurements show insertion loss, gain, and phase through a component or network. The useful frequency range, dynamic range, port count, source power, receiver performance, and calibration method all affect whether a configuration fits the job.

Calibration and fixtures matter

Results depend on moving the reference plane to the intended measurement point. Cables, adapters, fixtures, connectors, and the selected calibration technique can contribute meaningful error. A practical workflow records the calibration kit, connector type, fixture model, power level, bandwidth, and sweep settings with the result.

Choosing a configuration

Start with frequency range, number of ports, required dynamic range, device power handling, measurement speed, and automation needs. Then confirm compatible options and accessories for the exact analyzer model.
